SEVEN ISLANDS: THEN AND NOW
"In the Beginning" featured the flora and geology of the islands and ledges. The
geologic history 280 millions years ago was that of an ocean beach with an open water
lagoon and swamps behind it. Fossils of that period were on display along with Native
American memorabilia.
"The Resort Era" ran from the 1880s to about 1912 when Grand Ledge was said to be
the second most famous resort in Michigan. Marvelous pictures of the islands, the
island House Hotel with fountains, and the various steamboats hung on the walls.
Artifacts on display included one of the proprietor J. S. Mudge's canoe-like boats, a
cutter that may have raced on the frozen river, a table setting of dinner at the hotel, and
the pot bellied stove from the depot where 10-15 trainloads of visitors arrived each
weekend. Mannikins were dressed in appropriated period clothing.
"The Festival Era" began when the bi-centennial activities brought the islands back to
life with the building of the gazebo. We featured mannikins in bi-centennial clothing in a
section of the gazebo. The Yankee Doodle Days corner included t-shirts from Mudge's
Folly productions, a carnival poster, and ducks from the duck race. The Island Art Fair
area featured paintings, pottery, and t-shirts from the various fairs. Color Cruise and
Island Festival showcased paintings of our paddleboats, a corn sheller, spinning
wheel, and quilt representative of Color Cruise activities.
"Island Restoration" showed the present condition of the islands, plans for restoration,
a "Moose on da Loose", and a "Rare Chair" from the fundraising activities.
